Kevin Stewart

DSC_3521

I had the privlage of shooting a very talented pianist named Kevin Stewart.  A few days after talking about shooting, and thinking about locations. I drove past a park by my house.  Just sitting in between two trees, as a big white piano!!    I immediately called up my contact, and suggested that we shoot in Kevin the park ASAP before the piano disappeared.   The next day we squeezed some schedules and was able to meet for about a half hour.     I took some time to carefully shoot around several people sleeping in the park.   lol     but overall I was happy with the shoot.

For all you gear people out there,  Most of the shots were lit with 2 white Lightnings.  one placed behind the piano with the standard reflector, and the other was shot through a octabank. to fill and light Kevin.

If you ever get a chance to see Kevin preform, Go. he is very talented!  I look forward to seeing him play again.

Sasquatch Tavern and Grill

DSC_3406 copy

I was asked to photograph a small Tavern and Grill in Verdi.   I always have a preconceived picture in my head before I get anywhere.  How I think it will look, how I am going to shoot.    When I arrived however, I was pleasantly surprised about almost everything I saw.   With a name like the Sasquatch grill it had to be cool. But wow. The place was just the right size, it has a very cool deck to dine on.   and speaking of dinning the food was excellent!!  Everything from burgers, to prime rib and oysters!    Take the short drive out of town, and stop in for the evening. It will be well worth the trip!

Kicking and Screaming!!

I have always been a big fan of the Rodeo!  Its over a week of constant photo opportunitys.  However it is always a great place to get dirt all over and in your camera.

This year I did not spend as much time as I normally do at the rodeo. I had quite a few other jobs that conflicted with the schedule.  But I still managed to go a few times, and have a blast with a good group of photogs.

I have shot the rodeo many times, and a lot of crazy things happened.   This year however had a particularly scary moment.   every night the giant Percheron horses that are part of the Priefert team put on a little display for the crowd.  Most nights its just kinda a time filler, see them once you know what they are doing every night.    But one particular night the two horses closest to the hitch fell over.   It was a tense moment for the whole place.  The rodeo was at a standstill for a good 20 minutes.  Thankfully the horses were ok, and were hitched back up and finished the show.  A very memorable event to say the least.

First real attempt at some car rig photography, Did not have a whole lot of time, but I think I did ok.  Learned a lot about the car rig and the suction cups. I need to tweak the system a little bit, and bring a few other bits of gear.   But overall I think it went well.

I need some more cars to work on, and build up the portfolio a little bit, so if you have a cool car, or know someone who does.   Let me know and I am more than happy to print out a sweet picture of your super cool ride!!

Preparing for the 4th of July with a Knot.

I am very much looking forward to shooting Shaina and Max’s wedding on July 4th, I don’t think I have ever shot a wedding on Independance day.  It was a little chilly during the engagement shoot, but a great overcast day to take pictures.

This shot, is a stitch of 2 shots, one vertical of the couple, and another just to the right, this comes in handy when you want to print stuff bigger or you not sure if a horizontal would be better  :)

The air above Tahoe

Val was gracious enough to invite me on a flight up to Tahoe, with a pilot friend of hers.    Great time, a little bumpy on the way back, which made some people a little freaked out…

I have never been on a plan that small before, I was really unsure about what to expect and what to bring.   I decided to cover my bases and I brought 2 bodies, and three lenses.    I shot a bunch, but just had an amazing time looking around!  It was so peaceful.     Anyway a thanks again to Val and Gonzo.

Fishy trails!

So if I had to pick one thing that I loved about photography…   (ok well I can’t)    but one great thing is that the photo community is amazing.  On this past Saturday, 4 great photographers took off to a fun spot past Verdi.   Dan, Kevin, Val, and Myself braved the dark and the cold, as well as the rickety platform we were on to shoot some star trails.    This place is a little hard to get to, and at night it did not get any easier.  And in the process I may have taken a little fall… Startrails copy

Specs:   Shot with a Nikon D3 with the Nikkor 8mm 2.8 fisheye, shots combined with Startrails software.

Im in Las Vegas!!!! ……… Because “Im in Utah” does not have the same ring.

So, I am lucky enough to have a very good friend in Las Vegas.  Let me start by saying that my last few trips to Vegas have been a bit hectic.  However this time almost as soon as I landed I left and drove into Arizona, then kept going into Utah.  Final destination was Zion National park.

The place is amazing, we shot around that evening, but ran out of time. But still got some start trails in.  With very little sleep (in a car) we were up at 5:45 to make the first shuttle into the park. We planed on hikeing a place called angles landing. The trail is only 5 miles round trip. Except the trail climbs nearly 1500 feet.  At several times I was hanging on to the mountain by chains that were bolted to the cliffside.  and I do really mean Cliff.   An amazing Climb hike!!!

I would do it again anyday.  Plus we made it in an hour less time then the guide said.!!

Then I always have to swing by and Check out the fountains at the bellagio.   I love that darn thing!!  DSC_5525

Steph at VC

Shooting ambient….   something I do not do enough of.  So when I saw that I forgot to bring enough AA’s.  I thought that it would be a good day to do so. This is a little spot up near VC.  It was a nice day, a little chilly, but Steph  braved the cold.

Scarlet Presence

DSC_4829

I was asked by a friend of mine to shoot the band Scarlet Presence.  It was a good show, I wish I could have stayed around longer but I had to cut out early.  The lead singer Michelle is very charismatic and a lot of fun to watch, If you ever get the chance to see them please do, you can check out there Myspace here.. http://www.myspace.com/scarletpresence.

For all the gear heads out there:     I started shooting pure ambient light.   which was terrible, iso 6400 F2.8 at a 60th of a sec.. the lighting on stage was mostly only a back light,   I was ok with what I was getting, but I was sure I could do a bit better.  I set up a sb-800 fired via a pocket wizard. just adding a little kick at 1/64th power.  It added a little fill, but did not kill the mood of the show.
